Indecision
I’m walking down the street trying to figure out what I want to eat. I know that I want something, but I can’t think of anything that really appeals to me. I’m not hungry and I’m not craving anything in particular; I just want.
In the market, I stalk the aisles searching for the perfect choice, but nothing speaks to me. I contemplate going home empty-handed, but the idea doesn’t take hold; in fact, it makes me anxious. So I keep going, looking for the food I’m hungry for, but can’t quite identify. I can’t make up my mind.
When I feel that I’ve circled the market for long enough, I settle on a bag of cookies. Though they’re not really what I want, they’ll have to do. After all, they’re off-limits. I’m annoyed that I’m prepared to have something ‘bad’ and there’s nothing I want. But it doesn’t occur to me that something else or something ‘good’ might satisfy me.
At the checkout, I notice that the woman in front of me has a piece of chocolate cake with chocolate butter cream filling and thick chocolate icing. Instantly I change my mind about the cookies in my hand and rush back to the bakery section to grab the same thing. I’ll have what she’s having.
I’m so susceptible to suggestion that the mere glimpse of a dessert sets off a compulsion or an impulsive action. No wonder a television commercial, a conversation or the time of day can send me into a tailspin. Is it lunchtime? Is it dinnertime? Did she say mocha almond fudge? I can always make room for something that appeals to me, though I can’t seem to decide what that is.
So now, I’m walking down the street with a piece of cake I don’t really want. I’ll eat it, but it already feels like the wrong choice. I’ve made a decision that has nothing to do with what my body wants and everything to do with what my emotional mind wants; and my emotional mind is full of reactions to the shoulds and shouldn’ts of a dieter.
When I eat my cake, I think of all the choices I could have made; choices that didn’t appeal to me or occur to me when I was in the market. I want a do-over. I should be enjoying this treat. If I eat something this fattening and this forbidden, I should be enjoying it . . . or it shouldn’t count.
The only thing that stops me from trying again is that I don’t know what I want next.

All That and a Bag of Chips
I’m fighting the desire to eat because I’m bored. I should get up and find something productive to do, but I can’t think of anything that I want to do. Eating is looking like a great activity. Of course, if I head for the refrigerator, I’m only delaying the inevitable; I’ll just be in this same predicament (bored) but with chocolate on my face.
The “problem” is that I’m not hungry.
